i tested the under hood air at filter location- once you start moving the temp is the same inside the fenderwell- used rmote infarad thermometer for testing purposes!
phil...you are exactly right. Or at least I'v heard that from a bunch of different people. They say that it is important to have the stainless steel (or ceramic coated) like yours tube so it can insulate the air to the trottle body..thats why you shouldn't get the ones on ebay. They are aluminum..not a mechanic myself so I just have to take people's word for it.
A good test is to put your hand on the stainless tube after driving around town. My friend has an Airraid "cold" air intake on his truck, which has an open filter design. After driving around town I put my hand on his and it was very warm to the touch. I performed the same test on mine and the stainless tube was cool from sucking cold air from inside the fender well. It is even cool after sitting at idle for a while.
a friend of mine fabricated an intake box out of plexiglass and stainless steel to surround his filter element and led a tube to the stock opening in the fender for his bmw. i was thinking of buying an airaid or mac and doing that for my 4.2. anyone see any problems with this? my main concern is if i run a tube behind the grill that faces forward and acts almost like forced air, what if it is raining? how can i prevent the water from working its way up the tube and into the filter element?
Well, guys, I ordered my MAC intake today, can't wait to get it..I'll take pictures of before and after.
I'm going to see if I can't find a nice straight stretch of road and get some times from 0-60 and stuff like that...then try again after I put on the mac...
i got mine ordered to. it should be here on tuesday or wednesday. i also got the mac exhaust coming and some factory step tubes. i got alot to be doing this week.
i also got a bed rug on the way. should be about a week or so until it gets in. hopefully its warm enough to install it by then.
I love it. It was really easy to put on, and my truck takes the gas RIGHT NOW. Can't tell a lot of difference until about 4k rpm's then you can feel the difference in power...Could just be me, but my exhaust sounds louder too.
