front driveline...

ok...heres the question. I lifted my truck to about 8 inches of suspension lift in the front and i'm 99 percent sure that i have the gears set up right. But, when in 4wd the front end howls from about 30-32 mph and gets worse as speed increases....the thing that confuses me is that if you let off the gas the pitch changes....anyone wanna guess as to what it is....the front ujoint is almost straight onto the pinion...but the rear ujoint on the shafts at a bit of a steep angle...I'm havin this problem and justin is havin the same problem...and he had his gears set up proffesionally so i'm guessing its not the gears........

How about when the driveshaft is completely removed. If you remove the driveshaft and run it with the hubs locked..it'll spin the diff without the u-joints and tell you if your setup is bad...thats what I did and it was quiet as a a mouse when I took the driveshaft out but howls when I put the shaft back in.

do you have a cv on the front shaft???if not , then thats your problem, your d-line angles are messed up. you only want the pinion pointed at the t-case if you have a cv......if you dont have a cv then you want the same angle at the t-case and the pinion for it not to vibrate

ok...heres a new twist. this happend once before but i chalked it up to me not knowing what i was talking about.

So i'm drivin along through the city tonight...(35mph) and i come up upon some stupid kids in a dodge pickup truck with street tires stuck in a city park snow bank.....i stop to give them a hand, lock it in 4lo and yank them out....when i drop it back into 2hi and drive around with the hubs still locked, theres no howling.....but its getting a bit louder again after 5 miles of driving......Whats goin on?

id bet its the front driveshaft< the u joints need to "break" at the same angle or you will get noise and vibration it sound to me like you might need a front cv shaft

have you greased it lately does it help? if it is the u joints making that much noise chances are they are probably using up alot of grease. my jeep does the same thing the rear driveshaft howls pretty good it gets worse when it gets dry i have to grease the u joints almost everytime i drive it. i really need a cv but i have 2.5 ton driveshafts and i cant find a 2.5 ton cv.

Understood, but I couldn't remember if you told me whether or not you took the driveshaft out and tested it that way like I did.

Mine is similar to ryans (but mine is 6" lift).

I believe you also had this issue ryan....mine almost feels grainy, like someone filled the axle with mud, when hubs are locked. It starts at about 25. Then theres the howl which starts for me at about 50...at 65 it sounds like I have a 2nd engine running. All of this goes away when I removed the driveshaft and tested it in all combos (hubs locked/unlocked..tc locked/unlocked and all those combos).

Yea, they say if the angle of either end is not within 3 degrees plus or minus of each other it will equal vibration.

I've found this isn't the case if one of the ends is at zero degrees angle, however.

You still haven't bought one of Jesse's driveshafts yet Ryan?
