I am helping a friend buy a van, '98 with 108K mi. 5.4 . It needs the 100K tune up. What is the approximate range in price should he expect to pay? What exactly is done?
-Thanks
I do my own so I don't know the cost at a dealer. I'm sure it's not cheap. I would replace:
Oil & Filter
Air & Fuel Filter
Plugs & Wires
Transmission Fluid & Filter
Differential Fluid
Shock Absorbers -- Not a tune up item but if they are orignals at 108K miles on a Van you need em

I'm with you on this one; this is exactly what my trusted mechanic performed on my expy when I got to 100k miles, plus had him check the fluids, belts and hoses. Cost me $560 for parts and labor and he charges same rate as dealership. Good luck on the truck.
I wouldn't worry about the differential fluid unless it has been under water or is leaking. The synthetic fluid is designed to outlast the vehicle.
Here is what I would do @ 100,000 miles.
Spark plugs
Air filter
Fuel filter
PCV valve
oil and filter
clean the MAF and throttlebody
Change the engine coolant
thermostat
Fan belt
check all brakes
Have the tranny powerflushed
check the u-joints
Inspect the front-end componants for play.
This should keep it going for years to come.
Price will vary depending on whether a shop does it or you do it yourself.
I would suspect $600 or less would be fair, unless the inspecton leads to major repairs.
