Engine Timing
I think part of my problem with my truck running hot is the engine timming as it idles way to low and detonates when under a slight load (say going up a hill and holding a steady speed as you go up the hill) that and it might be running lean too. So a tune-up is in order. I have the factory service manuals for the truck and such but my question is if anyone knows of a different timing setting that might make it run better than the factory or is that the best setting to use? The engine is the factory 302 2bbl w/ 151K miles. It's in a '79 F-150 w/ A/C, P/S, P/B, C4, 2.75 gears.

I would check the vacuum advance asssembly and the mechanical advance for proper operation along with intial timing. Pulling the vacuum hose to the dizzy should reduce timing/idle speed and you should see an increase in timing as you rev the engine a little.
