It’s time to change the differential gear lube and I don’t know if it is a limited slip differential or not. How can you tell? The question is do I need to get the additive from the dealership? There are two tags on it one read 5W140 SNYTH Only. That’s not hard to understand. The other reads 3 5588 8C16 and S862B. It’s a ten-bolt pattern. Any help will be appreciated. How many pints/quarts of gear lube will I need?
Check the data code on the drivers door jamb. There will be a code for "axle". Post what it says there. I think if you have a limited slip it will be a letter, followed by a number i.e. H9 etc...
Actually the tag data given was all you needed. The space in the gear ratio number (the space between the 3 and 55 on the tag) tells you it is an open rear. The letter "L" in between the 3 and 55 would indicate a limited slip. The door tag also indicates it is a 3.55 open rear (19 on the tag). The 8 8 on the tag tells us it is an 8.8" ring gear, just to give you that info.
It should take 5.8 pints of lube, since it is an 8.8 without trac-loc.
Thanks for the info. Of course the local dealership told me it's a 355 limited slip and I don't see an L on the tag. I am always careful of what the parts counter guys say anyway
If it is an open rear end and not a limited slip do I still need the friction modifier additive. Will it hurt anything if you use the additive on an open rear end?
If it's not limited slip you dont need the additive but it also wont do any harm if you do use it. Some brands of oil have friction modifier in them and on the jug it tells you it can be used in open or limited slip diffs.
