Fifth wheel bedsaver

I ran across a web site that has a device to save your bed if your fifth wheel fails to lock into place. Its called a bedsaver and it will let the trailer slide down and catch it so it does not crush your truck bed.
Does anyone have one or seen one?
Does it look like it would work or is it a waste of money?
I called a couple of the places that they showed carried it but they do not keep them in stock. One place had only sold one in a years time and the other may have droped it the way they sounded.
I think it will only work if you are going slow or just taking off. If it works and you did not mind the looks one save would pay for itself.
Does anyone know of anything else on the market that will save you if your lock fail or for some reason you do not lock it?

I have seen a bed-saver at a local RV dealership. Appears to be a neat product. It would NOT do much at speed however. It's just a tray that catches the king pin before the trailer can fall down and hit the bed rails. If you were at speed, the trailer could bounce out of the "tray" quite easily.

Thanks for the reply. I have not seen one but I think that you would be right. If the king pin did not lock I think it would slide out of the hitch at a slow speed so it might work. If you hit a bump about the same time than all bets are off. Did it look like it would be worth trying?

I think it's like an "extended warranty". If you think you might need it, then it's worth the $$$. I wouldn't buy one myself.

why not just get a gooseneck so you don't have to worry about the king pin comming out?

Few RVs are made with gooseneck hitches. Converting from a 5th-wheel kingpin to a gooseneck can extert extreme forces on the trailer that it may not be able to withstand. Besides, one should worry just as much about a gooseneck being coupled as they do about the 5th-wheel hitch.

Thumbs up Got one

I saw that add for the bed save also. About a week later I was getting hitched up for a little weekend trip and got in a hurry. Well it was almost over. I was lucky cause I didn't pull out quite far enough to drop the kingpin but it was really close. I ordered the bedsave the next day. Its installed and I havn't had a problem with it. A real simple installation. By the way it does make the 5ver hitch a lot heavier. I think it added about 40 pounds to the weight. But still, I think it was a good investment. When ya got a nagging wife trying to get things moving little mistakes can be costly..
