I have a 86 with a 351w, four barrel holly all new igniation, plugs, controler and the carb is cleaned out but it almost stalls when I turn or hit the break really hard and I don't no why. I used to think I wasd low on fuel because the gauge doesn't work and I go by milage. but it does it with a full tank as well, can someone helpl me??!!???
sound s like the float level is to low. did it always do this or is it new to the truck? have you changed the fuel filter? have you checked fuel pump pressure.? did you know that a misadjusted float that is 1/32 onf an inch will effect the performance.
you say it almost stalls, does it do it when you leave the corner and are accelorating or when you remove your foot from the gas to enter a corner?
it stalled a few times and the problem is when I hit the gas again in the middle of the turn. the fuel pump is brand new and there is no other acceleration problems thats why i don' think its the fuel filter.
not knowing how old the carb is this is just a guess but the description you give sounds like you may have a bad accelerator pump. take off the air cleaner and look down the throat of the carb and make sure it is squirting a good amount of fuel when you move the throttle, if not the accelerator pump is bad.
the pump is a small diaphram that suirts fuel directly into the carb to aid in the transission from cruise to accelerate. is it possible that maybe a piece of the linkage bacame loose or bent or broken.
Sounds like it might be idling too low. While your checking the accelerator pump make sure your carb bolts are tight. I've seen the so loose that you could move the carb with your hand. The Haynes manual says carb bolts should be 144-180 in-lbs. Thats INCH-POUNDS. Also check the intake manifold bolts. Also check the vacuum on the brake booster system. If it's idling rough check the vacuum hoses with WD-40. Someone said you can use a stethiscope with the sounding rod removed. Just use the open hose and go around all the vacuum hoses.
Is that the original carb? Mine had the worn accel. pump problem and was leaking gas everywhere. I replaced it with an OEM-type reman. Holley. My idle is at 1100-1200 at startup, but then goes back down to 500-600 when the choke opens up after a couple of minutes. I have to pump the gas pedal once or twice to get the choke to open. I had alot of problems with the electric choke not working, so be sure your's opens up and is not sticking. The power lead for the e.c. comes from a relay, with a wire coming from the back of the alternator. Trace this circuit all the way around the engine compartment, and use a tester or test light if you have one to find a problem.
