They say if you can feel them with your finger nail, they won't come out. I know Eastwood sells a glass polishing kit, I used it to get some small scratches out and it worked great.
The glass polishing kit is of course worth a try, but it's most effective on stuff like windshield wiper marks that won't go away.
Check with a local windshield shop, you might be surprised how inexpensive repairs can be. I had a rock chip repaired in my windshield for $45.00, the same magic stuff they fill the chip with might also fill a deep scratch.
Another thought, check with your auto insurance, many offer a once every so often windshield replacement or will attempt a repair for free then replace it for $50.00 etc... regardless of your deductable. Normally the flaw must be in the line of sight for the driver or a threat to the integrity of the windshield.
I've got a buddy in the body shop business who told me once that super fine steel wool (I don't know HOW fine...I'd guess the finest you can find) will do the trick if they're not terribly deep scratches. He said you can't tell looking through the w/s that anything was done; doesn't affect the view at all. Still, I'm with NoMo. I'd check with my insurance agent first. I'd think that would be covered!
