Strange problem with my 97 powerstroke. When i engage manual hubs and engage transfercase, everthing works fine, highway speeds no noise. It's when i kick the transfer case into 2hi on the highway with the hubs still locked, at first no noise, but if i decel for a second and then accelerate I get a loud hum from the front end. Only way to get rid of the hum is to kick it back into 4hi. Makes no sense, pulled hubs off, rings move in and out easy, engage and disengage normally while i manually turn the driveshaft. Almost sounds like the spiders in the front end are turning, one hub kicking out somehow? enagement ring wore funny? Thanks for any advice.
I have the same thing with my '95 350, and I have a leveling kit up front, the driveshaft may well be the culprit. It just hasn't bothered me enough to find out yet. Do you have a lift kit in your truck?
I don't have a lift kit, I have had the 3rd leaf in the front for years now, but just put air bags in the rear. I keep 50lbs in the bags and they lift the back end about 3 inches. hmmm maybe a joint on the way out and the slight angle change made it worse. Physically all the joints appear tight and normal, noise is just really annoying, it's kinda handy to be able to keep front hubs locked in and handy sometimes in the winter. Just almost sounds like something comes out of enagement when driven by the front and needs the transfer case to be engaged to kick it back in. i might just have to let it develop more...wish I still had my extended warranty!
Just got home from work and washed my truck. When she stops drippin' a bit I'll take a look, it could be an axle stub u-joint going bad. I hadn't considered that until now. Other than that, "Run her 'till she heals, she ran fine when I had her!"
