98 Explorer Weird Wurring noise
-When reducing load on engine ( going down incline) something kicks on in the transmission or transfer case that "sounds like" it was just down shifted. It sounds similar to the rpm's reving up then slowing down except actual rpm's remain constant. The noise will stop if the gas is applied or the vehicle stops. It's a loud wurring noise, almost like a motor disengaging itself all the sudden then spinning out of control until it slows down.
Any ideas on what could be the problem, cost to fix??-- actuator motor, sensors, flywheel??? I'm justing trying to get educated before I take it in to a dealer and get taken to the cleaners.
Thanks for your imput.
I've had these go out on me before, and if they stick in the on position-it makes a pretty loud noise-reminesant of a turbo, and it is really hard to tell where it is coming from in the cab. But usaually they seem to stick and get unstuck before they freeze up or come apart. It will also eat up lots of power and gas mileage will suffer, or if it sticks in the off position it could cause it to overheat.
Good Luck
