I've been posting/asking a lot of questions/comments lately on this site. I was soooooo close to getting an F-150 I could taste it. Went to the dealer the other day only to find out I am upsidedown on my current truck. So I went to the local Auto Nation dealer. BOTH of them will only give me $8,200 for my truck (Still owe 15k) 2001 with 40k miles. No matter WHAT I have added, no matter WHAT condition it's in. I've added a topper ($1,100.00), Rhino spray bedlliner ($450.00), Flowmaster CAT back Dual exhaust ($450.00), oversized tires ($500.00). Keep it cleaned, waxed and armour-alled etc. 4.7L that KICKS *&%*.
Selling it outright (according to Kelly Blue Book) will get me $12K.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Anyway, looks like I have to wait a while for this purchace - I even measured my driveway to make sure the new F-150 would fit (real short driveway). Weeeeeeee - It FITS!!
Wooooo... it doesn't matter!
I'll stay around this site and will continue to post questions and "hopefully" continue to answer questions and help out where I can. This REALLY IS a great site.
Yeah, had a hard time swallowing after my dealer showed me what my '97 Expedition was worth in trade - $6000. So I try to tell him "Yes it has high mileage, but it has new tires (less than 10,000 miles), new brakes (less than 500 miles) perfect interior, minor scratches, etc, etc." All he would say is "That's nice, but when we look at your car we expect those types of things to be well taken care of, so it has no bearing on your trade value." I understand his point. I suppose if it was in mint condiditon with only 5 miles on it then it would have still been only worth $6000 to them. He advised me to take it to Car Max to get their estimate. They were only willing to give $7300 for it, but at least that is a bit better. I have been trying to sell it outright since that day, but once my F150 is ready for delivery I will just take the best offer I have at that point - starting to look like Car Max...
Always at least try to sell it outright, make your new purchase as an outright cash deal, then say, what if I trade this in, that way you can tell what you are getting for the trade. Then sell it outright, you can usually do at least $1000 better alot of times even more.
Vehicles are Bad investments, anyway you look at it.
selling outright is the only way. buddy wanted a new(er) truck in the biggest way. difference between trad in and bluebook retail was $4000.
i told him, for $1000. I'll sell your truck for you. that made him think. spend the effort. and don't let the dealer roll your balance in or you will be double duty inside, outside, upside down......
Thank you all for the advice. I've never sold a car outright. Is there a place I can go to get advice on do's and dont's?
I know I'd do much better that way but it's definately more of a hassle. I work 2 jobs now and am in DIRE need of a vehicle all the time. I guess I have to figure out a way to live without one for a while. I want to order a truck loaded the way I want and recent posts scare me regarding the time it takes to get a truck on order.
The local dealers just don't have ones on the lot that suite my needs. I've always bought trucks off the lot and they never really were exactaly what I wanted or needed. This time, I'm ordering it my way.
remember, if you are able to sell it "outright", you still have the small issue of having to pay off the loan ( which you'll still be about $7000 short) Sometimes, your only choice is to trade and roll the payoff into the new loan.

I agree. This is the reason I usually do that. Not just the lesser hassel.
I always seem to be upsidedown however... if I didn't like to customize and put so many miles, I'd consider a lease.
I should just hold on to my trucks longer... then the blood wouldn't rush to my head from always being upsidedown.
It's easy for me to sell my trucks. I take great care of them and as soon as I want to sell one of them my friends fight with each other over who is going to buy it. Maybe you know someone that is looking for a good ride!
