Anyone ever been to the EAA Oshkosh WI Airshow? My roomate and I are planning on flying down there from Alaska this year for it. The plan is to take a Cherokee 180. I figure about 25-30 hours to get there if all goes well.
I can't wait to go. Just wondering if anyone has any stories about going there. Even the Reno air races.
It'll be an adventure. We'll probably go with a Cessna 175. Can't wait.
I used to go there in the 80's. Always a great time! We were able to camp at a farm adjacent to the airport several times. We would get the EAA membership, you get great magazine, and it was a condition for getting a flight line pass as I recall. Wittman Regional Airport is the busiest airport in the world for the week of the air show. EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is the best place to get a look at a wide variety of aircraft. The aerobatic shows are great and don’t forget the bratwurst!
I have been to the museum and that was great. I have yet to take in the convention as it's so frigging busy with traffic I perfer to stay away. As popular as it is I'm sure you'll have a great time. They do tend to have some serious life exhausting crashes so be safe.
Just reading up on the approach into there from Rippon sounds like a kick in the pants. For this trip I'll be glad that my co-pilot will be private rated. Can always use the extra eyes and brain power.
Me flying there hinges on wether or not the guy that owns the airplane gets a new engine put in. 2300+ hrs on the tach. But I think he will.
Hows the weather down there generally at that time of year?
Rangersvt, that would be a neat way to meet someone from FTE.
Humidity is variable and usually only humid a day after it rains, nice weather here, lotta snow lately
I went there 12 years ago on a school fieldtrip, maybe 6th grade, the new museum wasnt up, a guy I know claims to have flown out of there in a Memphis Belle 20 years ago, flew to somewhere down south had to call wife for a plane ticket back cause he had no money, but he had to have that plane ride, guy said he could only ride if he rode all the way down, not time for a short ride apparently, he had his 2 year old son for the ride too lol airplane freaks
I live about 20 miles south of Oshkosh in Fond du Lac, and EAA is an adventure, to be sure. Used to work in restaurants in the area, and EAA week is a bear. Good tips, though.
Actually, the weather around here isn't that humid. Average highs around 80-85.
Where do you plan on staying? Most motels and campgrounds around here are booked years in advance. People in this area actually take out of state vacations and rent their homes out for the week. However, as a pilot, you can camp next to your plane at either Wittman Field or Fond du Lac County Skyport.
IIRC, the EAA week is followed by the Aerobatic Competition week at the FDL Skyport. Not so many crowds that week.
I won't be around those 2 weeks, as I'm usually camping then. Like I said, this area is nuts those 2 weeks, so we get out of town and go relax away from the crowds.
Take the 180! Unless you want the 175 to be part of the show. And take a passport. After 9/11 it is a lot easier to get through customs. Don't take any hand guns thru Canada, but make sure you have a rifle or shotgun and survival gear.
hreed, you know airplanes I see. Yeah the 175 can park in the "older aircraft section". The cruise of the Cherokee 180 and the C-175 are close enought to fly together. And he's got a constant speed and I don't
Were going to camp out under the wings. Well maybe under the 175, the 180's wings are a bit low for that. I'd get up and nail my head on the flaps.
I would have gone on the Memphis Belle anytime. I wish our company would send down one of our C-46's (kind of like a DC-3). We have 2 beautiful ones that we use to haul freight + our DC-6's. If they sent one I'd wash the thing when we get there just for the free trip.
I don't really like big groups of people but I can't have it both ways sometimes. Ohwell, it will be an experience. Just doing a long cross country trip will be great in its own.
My co-pilot and I will have to flip a coin for the rights to the approach. Or make a couple of them.
If all this goes as planned I'd be glad to meet up with fellow FTE'ers.
