I have poor heat and am planning on replacing the heater core. I've read all of the heater related threads but still have a question: do you have to reinstall the hoses with the QD's? I replaced the heater core on a Bronco I used to own and it had simple hose clamps. I don't really feel like spending the $20 one thread said the software for these connectors cost. Wouldn't hose clamps be cheaper and easier? Is there a catastrophe I'm missing? Please advise before I do something real stupid.
Easy thing you can do is to simply break the pipes off of the old heater core before removing it. This makes it very simple to get the quick disconnects off since you can pull the hoses out to get to them. Then when you get the new heater core in, all you have to do is simply snap the hoses back in place.
This makes things quite simple since the old core is going in the trash anyway. I did this and had my old heater core changed in an hour.
As I mentioned in the other thread, flush the core before you change it.
I did change the core in my old 91. I tried to break off the pipes like scott9050 said. No luck. I took a dremel tool with a cutting wheel and cut most of the way through then broke them off.
The replacement core I got from E-bay was not an exact match. It didn't have the quick disconnects. So I didn't need the old ones anyway. Someone else had by-passed the heater core because of the leak so I just re-connect the hose to the core and used clamps. It worked fine.
If you get the correct core then you may want to mess with the quick disconnects. If not, you will have to cut them off anyway.
Get the core from Ford. I tried 2 from auto parts stores that did not work and were of inferior quality than the Ford unit. I finally broke down and paid the extra $10. I had no problem breaking them off, I just wiggled the pipes up and down. Some pipes may be more stubborn than others. Good luck on this not so fun job.
i'm suprised ford had the part. lately they tell me they have no more parts for mine. its a 91. i have to flush mine ea year it seems. probably looking at a core down the road rick
