[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Apr-02 AT 08:14 AM (EST)]My question is: why does ford set the factory idle speed at 750 when from what i have heard ,if your going to let the truck idle for more than a short time it should be running around 1200 to prevent wet stacking ect. how long can you idle your truck at 750rpms without doing damage? i would believe in hot weather it would not be as much of a problem. in cold i don't let it idle for to long before taking of slowly to warm everything up together. also, for trips around 20 minutes, how long should i let it idle to let turbo cool down. thanks in advance
The manual says no more than 7-10 minutes of extended low idle. Look at www.concepttechnology.com. They have an inexpensive idle controller that works well, I have one and really like it.
What exactly is hurt by extended idle time? I understand that fuel burning is a bit less efficient at low idle, but if a truck was idled for extended periods at 750rpm, what could you expect to happen? Just curious!
Rotorhead,
The unburned fuel actually builds up on the exhaust valves, then when heated by driving it "resinates" on the valve becoming a hard substance preventing the valve from closing therefore causing possible valve, piston, rocker arm or pushrod damage due to the valve not being able to close fully.
i knew a guy that bought a new dodge cummins once and he went to a party early fri evening and left his cummins idling in the paking lot where his freinds picked him up at and he didnt come back and get it till late sat. morning.:-X11
