Hi everyone, been browsing these forums for a while now, making sure the 1971 ford ranger I was looking at would be worth it. I traded a 1999 suzuki ds 80 dirtbike for it. The truck has a b&m slap stick shifter, new starter and a few more things the previous owner changed out on it.........that was whats good about the truck...heres the bad things. The transmission is leaking, from where I don't know, I haven't looked yet. The valve covers are leaking oil, but new gaskets should cover that. THe last thing wrong is in the sterring colum there is a bushing or bearing that is kinda loose and u can feel it in the steering wheel while driving..any help on how to fix these problems would be much appreciated. I really just wanted to post here, since I finally got my truck =) i'm 17 years old and own a 1995 Thunderbird Supercoupe as well. The T-bird is a cool car, but I hopin to get this 71 truck in good shape as well.
well i like my truck for raceing but i see you already have a car for that why not make your 71 a mud bugger with some performance mods, and if you dont want to do that put some street tires on it and have fun burning rubber, oh and by the way what motor is in the truck that will help us out on what performance mods you should do.
One more thing I forgot to add. When u give the truck more than 1/2 inch of pedal it sputters and bogs down, but idles just fine, and if you floor it runs fine
It's a 2-wheel drive long wheel base. I think Im going to go for the street approach now.....just because I think it won't be as hard on the truck and I want this truck to last a long time.

sounds like it's time to rebuild the carb. rebuild kits are cheap and not too hard to do either. how many miles does your truck have? if it's high mileage your tranny might need to be rebuilt too, or it just might be leaking around the pan gasket. you might think about putting an aluminum 4 barrel manifold and carb while you're at it. ebay is a great resource for truck parts, btw.
It sounds to me like the cab mounts are rusted out. When I couldn't keep steering column bearings in my 72 that is what I found. The steering column always rattled real bad when I hit railroad tracks. Look up behind the front tire where the cab bolts to the frame and poke at the metal with a screwdriver, just above the rubber bisquit. It may even be visible. Repair panels are about $35 each I believe and a probably available right here on this site in the Motorhaven store. Welding required.

Just went through a similar problem, unhook (and plug) the vacuum advance and see if it still does it.
