A lower axle ratio will keep the engine and the tranny from having to work so hard because of greater torque multiplication at the rear axle. Lower axle ratio will also give more grunt available for pulling the boat out of the water.
Two things I would be concerned about. First. like you said. Getting it out of the water. Second. Stopping the thing. Your boat weighs more than your truck. I'd give myself plenty of room for stopping.
YEAH..I know.. but the trailer has brakes. and I'm sure I won't keep the truck for long..I feel confident that I can pull it out from the water..... but I'm not so sure about a long trip..
say about 260miles one way.. from CA to NV.. Las vegas..but I think that a 50 mile trip will work for now..
I also got this Ranger 1990 4X4 4.0 V-6 max towing is 5000lbs
Just be extra safe...those ratings are there for a reason, so dont go on any long trips! If anything ever did happen (accident ) and the highway patrol checked on your tow capacities, you could be in trouble there. Just be careful, and get a new truck!
the motor and truck can handle that weight just fine.. it's the tranny that sucks like everyone said.. The high first gear will suck for pulling the boat out of the water. On the highway you will be fine though, just don't use overdrive.
Something to consider is your legal liability. If you get in a wreck, and cause harm to someone else, and they find out that you are over the limit on your towing, you will be in deep doo-doo.
My advise: Get a bigger truck, or a smaller boat. Your future isn't worth the risk. This is a "Lose your house" sort of deal.
There are many issues that have been addressed here, and all have merit.
IF you were determined to keep your current truck for financial reasons or whatever, it can be modded to pull that weight.
I would;
1.) Replace the weak stock clutch with a HD aftermarket one- this trans is on the light side for towing, but half the reason is the clutch itself- it's small.
2.) Drain transmission case of ATF and fill it with a light synthetic gear oil.
3.) Install 4.10/4.11 gears in your rear differential.
Not the best options, but all you can do if you want to keep your current truck.
I'm thinking to purchase a boat.. but total weight with Trailer is 4500lb
I know I will have to change the truck.. soon
but how bad will it be if I tow the boat that is 1000lb over the limit.. if so.. will it even get the boat out of the Launch ramp?
Thanks
Hi I was just wondering is that the dry wieght of your boat, if it is then you should add 500 to 1000 more pounds once you have all your gear, water, food, drinks and gas and also dont forget to add the wieght of you and anyone esle who will be ridding in your truck, so you could really be looking at a weight of 5500 pounds.
