Had to check on that post % to make sure, lol. I think I'm doing relatively well. The PP and GC are what I read and post in while awaiting new posts in the '73-'79 forum. Those site's layouts look oddly familiar, Mil1ion
For the record - this is my post in the President's thread that I was referring to, the quote that Dennis produced below my response had nothing to do with me whatsoever.
Ken,
Regardless of the other hoopla, I would hate to see you underestimate the value of the Pig Pen.
Quite frankly, it IS what keeps me here. If you're a long time member like myself, you've seen the common questions in the Tech forums a thousand times. The tech forums alone are not enough to keep me here, at least not on a consistent basis. They grow old eventually and there is a lot of user turnover. If it wasn't for the Pig Pen, and more importantly the regular users in the Pig Pen that provide a sense of community, I'd rarely stop by the FTE tech forums, despite the fact that I consider myself (please excuse this ) a rather valuable and knowledgable contributor in several of them.
Anyhoo, that's my thoughts on the subject, albeit unsolicited.
General Conversation provides a place for off-topic discussion.
Pig Pen... what does it provide? A place for arguing, getting in the last word, making FTE look like romper room, showing how ignorant some users are, showing how pompous other users are, posturing, bringing out the worst in people, and more than average number of baitings, badgerings and name calling, plus bringing in discussions that may be borderline with FTE's content ratings.
If someone sold their truck and they're still here only because of Pig Pen, well, why should FTE pay for that?
You want it private so it's not in public view? That's a possibility. But its going to take time and money to manage that on a site with over a million monthly visitors. Who is willing to put their money where their mouth is?
Maybe take some time to Search your OWN posts and see the % of posts you have made in the PP & GC vs the amount of post's in TECH forums.
Dennis, closing the Pig Pen is not going to force people to post more often in the tech forums. I check these forums regularly and post when applicable, but I may go awhile without anything to contribute there. If you close the Pig Pen, you will definitely lower the total posts and probably lower your need for bandwith. However, if your goal is to keep members for the long haul, you have to have alternative places like GC and the Pig Pen so people will visit regularly. If you don't keep people coming back, I don't know how you can get the financial benefits of selling them products from the online store or signing them up for club FTE. Maybe you should require a member to have a minimum posts (like 25) before they can post in the Pig Pen, that would eliminate the drive by trouble makers. Anyway, in closing, without the Pig Pen, this site loses some of its luster.

A sense of community that is not found in many of the tech forums. I think this is best exemplified by how fast the Pig Pen has grown compared to any of the tech forums on your website. Without a strong online community those tech forums would evaporate. I think the Pig Pen forms an integral part of that community. Perhaps General Conversation could fulfill that role. I don't know.

Are you suggesting that people such as myself do not pay our way? Does it affect your bottom line I no longer own a Ford truck? If so, could you please explain that to me.

It depends on how much money you are charging.
It's your business decision. Is FTE more profitable with or without the Pig Pen?

PS The questions and issue debated here will not go away. They will once again become a part of the General Conversation. It seems that you would be no better than where you began.
I haven't Mil1ion,, but I don't buy anything online so it's not specific to Motorhaven for me. Last items I bought online were video games on eBay years ago. Also the reason I won't use Paypal. Keeping in mind, I don't have much use for stock or replacement items for my truck.

That is why I suggested it. I know it is possible, but did'nt know that it would cost more. If it was password protected you will have less page views for the pig pen from unregistered users just surfing the net.
Me personally don't have much to do with the pig pen. Most of it seems to be generated around religion & politics. I'm not to smart about either one so I don't contribute to the forum. But I do come in and see whats going on when I see a tremendous amount of activity in here.
In fact, the most I've posted in the pig pen has been today.
I'm not trying to start any trouble, I'm just trying to help suggest alternative solutions that will keep everyone happy in the long run & keep the site as active as it is.
These are just my suggestions, you do what you need to do. I just don't want to see people leave & the site go to hell because nobody could come up with a decent compromise.
If you would like, I can give you a link to a site that has a password protected forum like this. Only people that can access it is people that want to use it & has asked the administator for permission to access it. All their forums can be viewed by all except that one.
