Emissions light is on ???

My emission light is staying on . I reset the computer by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and it did go off. It stayed off for a day. This was with several starts and stops during the day. The next morning it came back on and stayed on. I should say I did this same operation on 2 different mornings. Both mornings it was below zero. The only mod I have done so far is a Vortex exhaust system. It is a 3" in and 2- 2.5 " out. The tail pipes exit out the rear. Could this be affecting the mass air sensor?. Other than the light coming on I would not know of any thing wrong. BTY it sounds

2004 F150 styleside 6.5 bed, fx4, 5.4, scab, 373 Ltd slip, tonneau cover "soft", 6 disk, black step rails, black cloth captains chairs with console, 18" rims, power slider, all silver no two tone. towing package, Vortex exhaust with dual tail pipes out the rear, power pedals " yes we do use them"
Thanks pvcs AKA Gary

If the light comes on you need to read the codes to find the area of the problem. Don't know if the exhaust mod is responsible. It is always possible.

Take the vehicle to your dealer and let him diagnose the problem. Disconnecting the battery is only resetting the code. Once the OBDII system detects the problem again, the light comes back on. Your dealer is the best place to have the problem taken care of.

Take it to the dealership and let them fix it under warranty. I dont think the exhaust would cause a problem with the mass air sensor since that part is intake related. Let us know what the dealer finds out, I would be interested because Im planning on installing a Borla exhaust.

I'm having the same problem with the Check Engine Light (Emission Light). Mine appears to be associated with the Fail System Mode Alarm (FSMA). When the FSMA is acitivated three times the Check Engine Light comes on. The FSMA only activites if the truck has been turned off long enough to allow the engine to cool off, but not totally cold. Upon starting the truck and putting it into Drive the FSMA is activited and the engine power is reduced. If I shut off the truck engine and restart, the FSMA normally doesn't return. Have taken the truck into the dealer five (5) times thus far. The error code assoicated with the Check Engine Light/FSMA is 2106 which the dealership doesn't have any definition for. In each case the dealership resets the code. I've had the truck for three (3) months and if the truck is totally cold or if the engine is still warm the anomaly doesn't occur. Thus far I've filled up a four (4) page spreadsheet (which I give to the dealership each time)describing what the conditions were and what actions were taken after the anomaly occurrance. Fords response, via the dealership, is we're aware of the problem and working on it.

About a month ago the engine light came on and engine failsafe mode appeared in the dash display as I was pulling out of my driveway. I stopped and turned the truck off and restarted it and it went away. About 2 weeks ago it happened again. This time it would not go away. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it. I don't remember exactly what the work order said but the Dealer had to call a Ford trouble line and did something to the wheel speed sensors. I will try to find the work order and post it as a reply. Haven't had a problem since

Tks for the information on 2106 code. Also interesting about the wheel sensoring. The definition of code 2106 makes sense (reduced power) because that is exactly happens each time the Fail Safe Mode Alarm come on. Since my last entry I've had the Fail Safe Moda Alarm come on five more time and of the course the Check Engine Light had also returned. Went to the dealership this morning to have the computer reset and to ensure the dealership is logging each time I take the truck into the dealership. They had only logged three occassions. Requested they insert a remark into their file stating that I have made a log noting each time the Fail Safe Mode Alarm and/or Check Engine Light comes on. Was told by the dealership to continue my daily driving of the truck with Check Engine Light on. Will head back to the dealership early next week and let them know about the wheel sensor fix and see what they say or do. I would assume they would be aware of wheel sensor fix if they were going to the Ford Motor Company to find a fix for the anomaly.

Update on my emission light problem

As I said in an earlier post, I had an appointment to get the """emission light on problem""" fixed today "2-07-04" Well nothing got fixed. The computer for reading the problem failed and they could not get it unfrozen. It is just locked up . I have another appointment next sat 2-14-04. What they could tell me is that my new exhaust system was installed fine and was not part of the problem. I will repost when it is repaired.

I love my truck and this is just one of those things. It will get fixed.

I have seen several posts on this subject where people said they had below zero temps. I wonder if this could be part of the problem? Air that cold is more dense and might cause the computer to send an error message. Just an idea.--Jack

I've found that "fail-safe" only comes on after starting the engine.
Never while driving.
I try re-starting & sometimes it works. A few days ago, I put it in reverse, backed up a few feet & restarted. Might just be a fluke, but no "fail safe" for three days now. Pollution light is still on.
Dealer says Ford is on it. Call back in 5 days.
Also rear window rattle has disappeared for the last week.GO FIGURE.

your right, being more dense( more air molicule in the same SQ FT area) but shouldn't tha O2 pick this up as lean, and change timing/fuel to compensate? How does the MAFS work with the putor to adjust for this problem, Mine has come back on after dealer reset. talk to Chip at Airaid, could be air leak around throttle body, make sure boot is not folded over, seal is important.

don't think air temp is causing

I've got the same problems. Wrench light comes on, goes into limp mode. Also sets service engine/emissions light which unlike the wrench will not go off after shutting down/restarting. I live in an area where the coldest is about 25. Many times when the light has come on it has been right after touching the throttle. I also get a surging of about 200 rpm when applying light throttle such as exiting a parking space in a lot. This is with no movement of the pedal from me.
