Engine Chatter

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Apr-02 AT 04:49 PM (EST)]I have 36,000 miles on my 1999 V10 automatic, and every time I pull off after a "cold start" my engine has a little chatter when i let off the gas. It only does it till the engine reaches norm operating temp. Does anyone else have this same thing? and what could it be.

Check the heat shields on your exhaust. Once they warm up they expand. You could have a broken weld. A hose clamp should solve it if that is the case.

My 99 did that too along with a clatter at first start up. It turned out to be piston slap and Ford replaced my engine. My replacement engine now does it too. It doesn't clatter at first start like the old one did but rattles pretty good until warm. Only noticable when the rpms build before each shift. If I slightly let up on the gas just before it shifts I can get it to do it every time. Once the engine gets warm it stops. I don't think it's my heat shields because I have the Borla header kit and it did go away with the replacement engine for awhile.
