Been working on regearing my axel today and i got to where i have to pull out the original pinion out of the rear, and I cant get it out. Had the air hammer on it and sledge and still nothing. Anybody here do their own gears? Im new to it all but seems pretty easy, and plus a friend of mine that is a mechanic is going to check mine out before i close it all back up to check the pattern and backlash etc.. But my friend told me the pinion shouldnt be that hard to take out. Just looking for any opinions or personal experiences. I think i just need to hit a little harder.
So you got the diff out and the nut and companion flange off and you are hitting it in towards the rear.. Is that correct. Are we talking about a ford 10.5 or dana????? Year
The front bearing needs to let go to push it out. I don't think you have much choice other than smacking it. Of course you are going to trash it but you don't need it. Just try not to damage anything else. I don't think heat would help,,,bad access. Are you hitting it on the threads?
They are concaved in the middle and i had the right bit for the air hammer so it fits perfect without damaging the pinion but it wouldnt do it and than i would leave the nut on it 3/4 the way and get a peice of 2x4 wood on it to hit so i wouldnt damage it.
Gonna have to hit it with a serious hammer its gotta get out of there. Are you worried about trashing it? Take the nut off and hit it with a big socket or on the threads if you don't need it. It will come.
