I'm looking at installing Borla Headers and a Gibson Catback on my 99 Superduty V-10.
If anyone has Borla Headers, I am wondering what kind of experience you have had regarding having to retighten the bolts on the headers after initial installation.
I have been told that this is something I will have to live with if I get Aftermarket Headers.
Appreciate any replies on this question, or other info on Borla or Borla vs.Banks.

Borla Headers

The Borla's come with Stage 8 locking bolts. Basicly little tabs with c-clips which prevents the bolt from turning. I chose not to use the clips and had to retighten the bolts twice. It wasn't much, like 1/8th turn. It's been over a yr now and they are all tight. Think of the Banks kit as the Lincoln of headers and Borla as the Mercury. Borla's are an economical second choice to the Banks system.

What was the reason htat you did not want to use the locking bolts?
Do you know anyone who used the locking bolts that still had to retighten the bolts?
What are your thoughts on the Borla regarding its performance and the collector pipe verses the Banks, other than the price?

Thanks for your help. I'm getting longer in the tooth and don't get around as well anymore. Don't want to be working on my truck anymore than I have to!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Apr-02 AT 03:59 AM (EST)]I chose not to use the locks because it had turned into a very long day and after trying to put on a few I got fed up. There isn't alot of space to work with. I'm sure with a little patience I could have gotten it done. I also knew that the bolts would loosen as they went though the heat/cool cycle. I wanted the bolts tight before installing the locks. After checking a few more times and finding nothing loose I figured good enough. The Borla's use 3/8" plate for it's collector flange. Two of those bolted together makes it stout. I think as long as the bolts don't loosen, you'll never blow out the gasket. (Ford uses this same system to connect the Cat so I'm not worried) Banks doughnut style is strong too. AS for the rest of the pipe it is very simmilar. Where I really notice the power increases is when I hit a hill while towing. If I get the RPM's over 3k it just seems to keep on pulling. Several times I've looked at the speedo and had to let up because I was going to fast for the conditions. My towing MPG has also increased.

I noticed that you plan on getting a gibson cat back. well here's my 2 cents on gibson! i bought a new cat back system from gibson last summer in stainless almost 400 bucks. and after one winter in indiana with salt the stainless started to get surface rust!! i have a lifted 97 f-150 4x4 that i have alot of time and money in. when i called gibson for there input on this they said its only surface rust and won't rust threw. well that might be but it still looks like crap i also had to make a steel block to hold my spare tire away from rubbing the pipes. last well i have JBA headers and the gibson cat back and my truck is no louder than stock!!

oh yeah the stainless tips. they have bolts that clamp them on they put them on top of the tip. if they would have put them on the bottom you would never see them...

save your money and have a local shop do your cat back or go BOROLA ALL THE WAY...
