97' Rough idle when cold ....

97' Exp, V6 (OHC). In the morning, or after it has sat for a while, the idle is rough for a few seconds. If you drop it into gear and start moving it "chugs" but only for a few seconds (literally)...doesn't need to warm up, just take the RPMs up a bit and the roughness goes away. I cleaned the IAC figuring that would help.....No change. Other than the rough idle, it runs fine. I recently had the Vapor Management Valve replaced (check engine light came on) ... could that have something to do with it? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What codes have you been getting on it? Many have had trouble with the lower intake gaskets leaking causing a simalar problem. Have you cleaned the MAF. Their is also a good test electrical test to run on the IAC in the sticky at the top of the forum page. Just some suggestions.

Never did read the codes myself. The dealer said that it was the "Vapor Management System fault". They replaced the Vapor Mgmt Valve, and the code never reappeared. I have not cleaned the MAF...after the "problem" that I had with the IAC I don't know if I want to mess with it.
The "problem" that I eluded to was that I cleaned the IAC and after reinstalling it, it "howled"....loudly. I concluded it was electrical because when I unplugged the IAC it immediately stopped howling. To make sure it wasn't some type of acoustic phenomenon I ran the engine with the IAC loose so I could alter the amount of air passing through the IAC and it had no
effect on the howl. But un-plugging the IAC stop the howling immediately.
I used "throttle-body safe cleaner"...which frankly didn't clean very well. I figured that some of the cleaner must have gotten inside the IAC so I "baked it out" in an oven @ 200 deg for 20 minutes. After I put it back in the howl was gone. (I figured 200 deg was hot enough to evaporate any solvent, but not hot enough to hard the plastic). This was a last ditch effort to get it back running so I could get to the dealer for a replacement, which I never did.
I planned on replacing the IAC but it had NO effect on the condition (even after the cleaning incident), so now I'm thinking that the IAC may not be the culprit. Like I said it never gives me any trouble except when it is cool, and then only for a few seconds.
I know the bake-out incident was a bit "unconventional" but I was desperate.... 8-)
