Hey guys, any one with a 5.4 have a high pitch sound when slowing down from say 65mph? My truck does it when getting off the xpressway and take my foot off the gas to slow down. Sounds kinda like turbo whine but I got a 5.4.
thanks,
dbugem
are you sure it isnt noise comming from yer tires bouncing off of the retaining wall? i know my truck does it especially on offramps and bridges. i dont think that the engine has anything to do with it.
I dont think RedRanger1 was joking with you, tires can make some strange noises and because of the fact they are spinning they can also throw their voice so to speak.
Another thought, did you in any way modify your stock airbox, or replace it with an aftermarket setup? My airbox is modified and whenever i am slighlty on the fuel pedal i get a whistling noise just like it has a turbo, just like you describe. Someone on here had sugested it may be from the air rushing past the partialy open throttle body plate. Or, maybe you have a leak somewhere in your intake?
My engine has made that whistle sound on acceleration since it was new. I don't have a modified air box either. I am less concerned about the whistle noise as I am about how oily this engine gets. I had to wipe down the brake fluid res the other day so i could read it and I only have 17k on this 2001 engine. everyone else with the v-10 or v-8 getting oil mist blowing on everything in your engines???
I don't notice any tire whine on my truck. I have about 55k on my buggy now and still have the original Steeltexs on it. They are ready to be replaced but I have never noticed the noise.
As far as Redrangers comment, I think dude was serious. The noise from the tires could be bouncing off of concrete walls or even guardrails. I kinda took his post like you did at first and thought it was funny, but looked at it again after your post. He has a good point. I assume he is a he.
As far as oil in the engine bay, I too notice all that oil. I think I have a leak in the head or head gasket. I can't afford the head job right now (no jokes please!). I will get it looked at when business picks up a bit. Yeah, my PS reservoir is pretty messy.

ok guys, its definetly not tire noise because i can hear it when I take my foot off the gas pedal on the open road. I have not modified my airbox yet. I do have a K&N filter but the sound was the same before and after installation. When sitting in the truck sounds like it is coming from the middle to the passenger side of the engine compartment. The truck has had it from the first day and when under 50-55 mph its gone.
thanks, the mystery continues.

Now why do you think we would joke about this?

Yikes, sorry to hear about oil getting all over these engines, my 2001 5.4 is clean as could be at about 14K on the odometer, I hope it stays that way!

My V-10 has a bit of front axle whine when the hubs are locked and I let off of the gas.It is more pronounced in 4wd.Could the front or rear ring and pinion be your noise?Just a thought .
yes redranger1 was serious. i have noticed that when comming on and off of ramps that there is a whine noise that comes from the vehicle that bounces off the retaining wall. he didnt say that it was all of the time so i assumed it was just on ramps. guess that just prooves what assuming does.
You should really check you intake system. Especially where it meets the throttle body.
A simple way to test for possible air leaks is to start the engine and spray WD-40 around the "joints" on the plastic intake snorkel & where the throttle body meets the manifold. If your idle changes, then you just found your leak. (A motorcycle troubleshooting tip)
I would also inspect all of your vacuum connections.
Another possible source, although remote, would be your alternator bearings.
A pulley could give off a whining sound. Hard to really comment on that since I've never heard your sound though...
