'02 Door Panel Removal

I am going to be replacing the junk speakers in my new F250 in the next week and was wondering if anyone knew of any tricks to get at the stock speakers. I am going to replace the front and backs for now with 2 sets of JL Audio XR570-CX coaxils. More will come later. Thanks for the help, Brandon:

'02 Door Panel Removal

I installed the same speakers about three years ago.

Due to the time, some of the particulars escape me, but...

For the front speakers in the doors:
1. The black platic cover plate by the side view mirrors pops off. There are about 3-4 plastic prongs that hold it in place and gentle prying will pop it off.
2. The 3x8 panel that houses the electric window and door lock switches pops off in a simiair manner. I think there is a screw for the interior door panel that needs to be removed.
3. Remove the courtesy lamp lens to expose a screw for the interior door panel. Remove the screw.
4. I think there is a screw near the door latch handle that needs to be removed.
5. All said and done, I only remember about 3-4 screws that hold the interior trim panel to the door.
5. After all this is done, the interior trim panel is removed by sliding the panel up about an inch and a half to unseat it from the retaining clips. Do not try to pry it strait off! It needs to be moved up, and then off.
6. Re-assemble in reverse order.

For the rear speakers behind the rear doors:
1. Remove the plastic rear door sill panels by gently prying back and forth. There are about 5-6 plastic prongs that attach it to the body.
2. Remove the upper rear seatbelt attachment bolt located near where the passenger's outside shoulder would be. This is done by popping the triangular shaped plastic cover open to epose the bolt.
3. Remove the plastic interior molding that contains the molded speaker grills. This is done in a simialir fashion to the plastic door sill plate. Start by unseating the plastic clips at the bottom of the panel and work your way about 3/4 of the way up. You should not have to fully remove the panel to gain access to the speaker location. The black rubber weatherstrip is kind of in the way and may need to be peeled back some.
4. Re-assemble in reverse order.

I am only moderately wrench-minded, but the whole process of taking apart, replacing the speakers, and re-assemble only took about two hours. It is really a simple task if taken slowly so as not to break any of the plastic clips on any of the panels.

I wish I could tell you that the speakers alone made a temendous difference in the sound quality, but I added a 6 channel ADS amplifier and two Fosgate 10" subs ubs behind the rear seat at the same time. All this with the factory head unit does make for awesome sound! Hopfully the speakers alone will also yield noticeable results.

Hope this helps.
Jay

Wow thanks for the quick resposes!!!! I only have the money to do this right now. In a few months I plan to add 2 JL Audio 10W3's and a JL Audio 5 channel 500/1 amp. No head unit yet. I am hoping that in dash DVD players will come down in price within the next year or so. Brandon
