Turbo ?'s

I was tighting the clamps on the y-pipe to turbo and thought of somthing interesting. Why on pre-powerstroke turbos is their a box between the turbo and the engine.(my old mans 94 idi turbo) Was it a cosmetic thing or is their an advantage to having the box. I remember installing a turbo on a chev 6.2 years ago that also had one. any ideas??

I don't really know if the box served a purpose or not, but I'd think that if there were an advantage to having it, they wouldn't have quit putting them on.

I am trying my best to picture a box in the system of the factory turbo ford. (pre powerstroke) and I just cant picture a box. There is the air cleaner box before the turbo and the air chamber which mounted on top of the intake manifold connecting the turbo feed to the engine . Help me ! Send pics please.
