I have a 1990 F-150 xlt lariat 4x4 with a 302. I am thinking about putting a cat-back exhaust and a cold air intake to increase power and get better gas milage. I am wondering what your opinions are of these products and and what are good companies to get them from. I am also wondering if and how you can make a cold air intake yourself.
A catback is a good place to start. It is one of the choke points of the exhaust (the Y pipes are awful, and of course headers are always good ). The stock airbox design is actually pretty good from the factory. You should check out http://www.performanceunlimited.com/projectmpg/ . They actually did some testing with high flow kits, high flow filters, and stock. To sum it up, you will actually get more bang for much less $$ by wrapping youre stock air box (with a K&N filter in it), with the special reflective tape they mention on that site. Once nice weather comes back around (ie...no more salt, snow, and sand!), I plan on wrapping my intake with that reflective tape.
