302 Diagnostic

Hey people...very first post here....and I'm mildly frustrated. I've got a 78 F-150 that theoretically has a 302 in it (the trans has been swapped out, and it wouldn't surprise me if the motor was not original as well). The problem is that the motor will crank strong, but will not turn over....and it shoots gas plume-style out of the carb (which is a 2 bbl Holley). I've checked the firing order at least five times, brought the motor up the TDC, checked the firing order five more times after that, took out the distributor, re-installed it. Still the same problem. I know that my diagnostics are not the greatest, so I'd like to know where to start looking to get this beast fired...After all, the sooner I get my parts runner on the road, the sooner I can stop hauling short blocks in my car.

sounds as though your needle and seat in the carb aren't shutting off the fuel flow and your probably flooding the engine big time whch would be one reason why it wouldn't start , also do you have spark at the plugs?

I should probably check again, but there was spark. When I first got it turning over, it would sputter really quick and die, like there was a huge vacuum leak somewhere. I made sure everything was connected and plugged where it should be, and this just the newest trick this truck is pulling on me.
