I have an 88 F150 with 5.0 V8 and A4OD tranny. I recently replaced the tranny with a used one and it shifts to all 4 gears, but it shifts late and will downshift too easily. I can keep it in overdrive only if I am on a level or downhill stretch at around 70 mph. As soon as I give it any gas at all, it downshifts to third.
The shift times remind me of when I pulled a very heavy boat, but now it is that way or worse with an empty truck.
How can I adjust the shift time and how will I know (other than simply guessing) when I have it right? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

That would be an AOD transmission. Those have either a rod or a cable from the throttle body to the transmission to control pressure. If it isn't adjusted properl you will get the problem you are having. I don't have a copy of the right way to adjust it.
Thanks again Casey, it is always nice to learn new things. I knew it was there, but didn't know what it was called. Now I don't have to explain to the parts man what I mean by "that thingamabob". (GRIN)
