Hopefully you guys can help me out. I drive a 1999 4x4 V6 XLT Explorer. Over the past couple of days, I noticed that it has been leaving about 5 or 6 spots (1 inch stains) of fluid on my driveway and in my garage. Now, let me tell you that I am overdue by 3000 for an oil change because I went out of town, BUT the fluid is grey. I'm not certain if it's oil or not. It does not have any smell to it. Not only that, but I have been having difficulty with the truck not wanting to shift into reverse and also when the truck gets going in warm weather, it makes a sound like someone blowing across an empty bottle. This sounds stops if I rev it up or drive, but if I'm at a low speed or sitting idle it's really loud and annoying. Of course I know nothing about vehicles, so any advice you could give I would most definitely appreciate it. I just don't want to take it to a mechanic and have him tell me 10,000 different things.
Main thing, I just wanted to know what fluid it is leaking and what I should do about it.
Take a look under the vehical, and feel around or see if you can see any drips of fluid on any compenent under the vehcial, also you said its a grey color i cant think of any fluid that turns grey with age, i would check the oil see what color it is, check the tranny fluid, see what color that is (to check that its the dip stick towards the rear of the engine compartment kind of looks like an oil dip stick but its not, with the vehical warm and in part and running check it) It could be brake fluid thats leaking sometimes that tends to turn grey but it would have an oder of either, but what i would do is, after you look under the vehical and if you see nothing let it sit over night or for what ever period of time you start seeing the spots again go under the vehical with out moving it and look above were you saw the spots.....One thing that i noticed on mine is if you greese fittings are properly lubed or over lubed they sometimes tend to leave the spots when they get wet or sometimes just leave spots, had the same problem with mine thought it was oil, oil pan was dry next day looked under and saw the greese fitting
