What axle", IF it is a sterling full floater with 12 inch by 3 inch brake drum. The drum will slide off with out removing the hub. But you need to replace the inner seal, there is a special socket that you need to get the nut off. IF you have a 9 inch. The drum will come off, and the axle is held in with a 4 bolt flange, The 8.8 is held in by C clips so you have to remove the pumpkin cover and go from there. I would recommend a service manual.

Rear Hub Removal
Got it all apart, just got back from parts store picked up the socket for the ratchet nut. My understanding is that the nut is to be torqued to 55-65lbs, and then backed off 5 clicks. Good enough?
