I'd love to re-gear. Problem is...I don't have enough for front and back. Can I do the back (4.10) and leave the front (3.55) if I disconect the front driveshaft and remove the 4x4 fuse to thwart a transfer case explosion? I'd update the front at a later date but the summer doesn't get much 4x4 action.
you can definately do that and you dont even have to diconnect the drive shaft. just remember if you had the hubs locked and accidently put it in 4x4 you would blow the transfer case.
i personally think saving an extra few months and doing both front and rear at the same time is a better option. maybe you can find a donor truck with 4.10's and get it cheap enough that you can buy it and change both rears at the same time.
In the mean time, go to a bone yard and get a spare 3rd member for the D44 and look out for 4.1 reverse cut gears. Good used ones can be had from time to time. You can build it up as you get the parts and stick it in later.
