I am picking up an 86 f350 dually with a 6.9 diesel. It will be used to tow a 32 foot fifth wheel approx 5000 miles annually. The remainder of the year it will be my daily driver ( another 25000 miles annually).
It is pretty much stock and well maintained.
I need the power for towing and appreciate the fuel consumption improvement over my 79 351m c6.
What power improvements would you recommend and are there any fuel mileage tips that a diesel newbie should consider?
Keep the good maintainance going. After working the engine, let it idle down to neutralize the systems. Get some test strips from napa or some diesel repair shop to check the cooling system for dca levels.(this will prevent cavitation erosion). Any other questions we will be happy to get back to you. Dont expect the thing to fly with the trailer on the back, but it will do a good job for you. Probably the best way to get more power out of the engine is to add a turbocharger system and a bigger exhaust system. How many miles on the engine now?
