Unhappy Problem

My ford f-150 5.8l keeps throwing off the serpintine belt. there is an intermitent loud clunk coming from the upper left corner of the engine. I suspect either an alternator or a water pump. Any ideas...... thanks

Are any of the accesories loose or not aligned correctly? Any chance the harmonic balancer is doing a tap dance? Is the idler pulley putting enough tension on the belt....ie....is the pointer in the acceptable range?

I've seen this happen particularly when the spring in the idler pulley starts loosing it's pressure and doesn't apply sufficient pressure to keep the belt from coming off.

Finally, is the belt just worn to the point that it has stretched out and won't stay on?

Thats the thing the belt is new and when it starts to throw the belt it also chews it up. I can see it slowly coming off of the alternater pulley. Also don't forget the horrible loud clunk coming from around the alternater area. Would a bad water pump or alternator make this noise? I have never seen this before.

Have you changed the alternator or water pump recently?

check your brackets to make sure they have'nt loosened up at all. I doubt that they had, but it is a starting point & you never know.

Next, check your all your pullys to make sure they are not bent for some reason. Pay close attention to your idler pulley, If it is not able to put enough tension on the belt, then the belt will be loose & come off as decribed.

I can't help but think the clunk and the thrown belt are related. You may have an accessory (such as the alternator) that has a bearing that is getting ready to seize. It intermittently seizes up for a second or two, and off comes the belt. You can turn it by hand OK, but at high RPM, the bearing starts to lock up.

Any bad driven accessory will make an ugly noise when it's getting ready to go on strike. I've heard clunks, high pitch squeaks and whines, and grinding noises as alternators and such go through the throes of death.

You might buy a mechanic's stethascope and try to isolate the source of the noise. The stethascope will pick up small noises that you can't otherwise hear. Just stay clear if it gets ready to jettison the belt or it will wallop you upside the head.
