What Range am I in?

How do I tell what range I am in except for guessing.
My transfer case does not have detents it just slides from one range to the other.Should it have detents?

Thanks.
Mike.

P.S. it's a 79 F-350

Yes it is a 205. My question is how do I tell, short of guessing, when I am in 2hi or 4hi for example. There are no detents between them the shifter just move smoothly from 4hi to 4lo.

Hope this makes sense.
Mike.

If your linkage is rusty or frozen it will be hard to feel the detent's.

i always do both mine like this. say l'm comin from 4lo (since no gear after it) i'll pull the shifter all the way back into 4hi. unlock hubs, then take off reach down and just bump the shifter it'll slide right into 2wd. i mainly do it this way when travelin short trips to other play spots so i don't have to get out and unlock then relock my hubs every few mins. because with hubs locked ya can shift on the fly to 4hi. ya can't with em unlocked, but ya can go from 4hi to 2wd with um unlocked on the move.
