Towing Capacity

I currently have a 1978 F250 Camper Special 4x2wd 460/C-6 with a 4.10 possi and 33in over size tires.

I'm wondering how much my towing capacity would be reduced or changed if I replaced the 4.10 with a 3.54?

I think about 1000# would be a close ballpark figure. With your oversized tires, your trucks effective axle ratio is closer to 3.75 actual ratio. A 3.54 axle would bring the effective ratio down to about 3.31. Ford usually recommends a minimum axle ratio of 3.54 for heavy duty towing.

I didn't realize just how much my over size tires effected the ratio....
Thanks horsepuller!

I wish I had 3.55 instead of 4.10. The latter is good for weights over 10,000 lbs, even 12,000 lbs. But 3.55 is better on highway and gets you better MPG with lower RPMs.

New Gears

I just changed my gears from 3.55 to 4.10's. Unloaded mpg went from 18 to 15. Haven't tried loaded yet but if I was concerned about fuel milage I'ld get a Honda.

After spending some time pondering the whole thing: I may change out the rear gear to a 3.54. but the truck was designed to pull, and that is ultimately what I would like it to do. My answer for better gas milage is: I'm getting a second truck that will give me the economical up-side and pretty much leave my tractor truck as the hog it was meant to be.....
