I posted this in the 80-86 forum, but haven't gotten any help so I'll try here.
85 F250 3021 EFI. Truck just had a tuneup and was running great. I'm driving down the highway, and all of a sudden the truck starts running crappy, really rich, lots of black smoke, and stong smell of gas. I removed the A.I.R pump which was seized anyways, and plugged any loose vacuum lines. BTW I did all this before the truck was running crappy. Anyway, I get the truck home barely, stalling and farting the whole way. In check the EGR valve with was stuck either open or closed, and I cleaned it with Injection cleaner and got it working again. Then I pulled the vacuum line of the Fuel Pressure Reg to make sure it didn't blow the diaphram, it didn't. All of the battery and cable connections are tight and working properly. My question is... On the back of my motor, I have a crossover pipe that goes from head to head with a check valve on it, which is now broken due to the ungodly amounts of smoke and exhaust leaking from there. Coould this be the cauise of all my problems or is there something besides that??
Cleaning the egr valve is only a temporary fix. Did you check to see if the valve will hold a vacuum? Disconnect the vacuum hose from the egr valve and plug it off (the hose, not the valve) and go for a test drive and see if you get any better performance.
Finally, fixed it. When the Air Check valve on the back of the head blew, it melted the vacuum lines going to MAP sensor. After fixing the vacuum lines, did an oil change and got about 1 gallon of gas out of the oil pan. The truck is much happier now. Although it cost 150.00 in labor to find the melted lines.
