I need a little help choosing some valve covers for my FE 66 F100. It is supposed to be a 390 but I haven't checked the stroke to verify it. It runs like a 390. It a late 64 or 65 engine and heads with adjustable rockers. It came with a set of chrome (dented and beginning to rust) Milodon valve covers. I want to replace them with some original Ford covers. I pulled a set off of a FE motored 65 F250 at the wrecking yard but they won't fit. The aren't tall enough to clear my rockers. Not even close. I have a set of old cast aluminum "Cobra 427" that are the tall style but interfere with the 1977 brake power booster. Can anyone explain what covers could be the ones I need? Thanks.
You might want to look for some Cal Customs. I have a set that are similar to them, and they clear my adjustable rockers, but arent as tall as the cobrajet/lemans style. I wish I had a name for mine, but I got them on Ebay(where else)
Edit to add, I'll swap you If you want, I can send you a picture and measurements of my covers... maybe we can work out a deal?
I'm using Mercury Pent-Roof VC's on my 410 in my high-boy. When I changed to the disc-brake front axle, I tried to use the later brake booster and master cylinder to match. I soon found that a '77 vacuum booster wouldn't clear the VC's, so went back to an earlier dual-diaphragm booster with smaller diameter, and it works just fine with the later master cylinder. Not the easiest solution for you I realize, but maybe a last resort, and the boosters aren't all that spendy. Steve
Barry,
Honestly can't say, because I never completed installation of the larger diameter booster when I realized that it wouldn't clear my VC's! I've since converted my rear brakes to discs too, and am quite happy with the braking capability when I'm trying to snub down truck with slide-in camper aboard, total about 10,000#, FWIW.
