Engine temperature
I am looking for some feedback on my 1972 f350 with a stock 360 cid. What resources or ideas could you provide to troubleshoot
a couple of gauge problems. I recently acquired this truck and am doing my homework for the springtime. The engine temperature gauge arrived doa and I would not know where to begin to look. Also the voltmeter stays perfectly vertical, so I suspect that there is an issue with that baby. Many thanks for your help.

Does the fuel gauge register? If so then it's not your Insturment panel power supply. It your fuel gauge is ka-put then you might need this power supply. It is located on the back of the insturment panel.
Another test for the temp gauge is with the key turned to "Run", remove the wire from the temp sending unit and touch it to the engine block. The gauge should pin to the right.
Good luck,
The fuel gauge works well as that was one of the first things I kept my eye on.(The truck came with an empty gas tank.)
So power supply must still have some get up and go left in it.
Where abouts in the engine compartment should I look for the
temp sending unit?

The sending unit screws into the top of the intake manifold. It should be located about half way in between the carb and the dissy. It stands up about an inch and is as big around as a quarter. It should have 1 wire that attaches onto it's top.
When you touch this wire to the block do not hold it there long as you may burn up the gauge. It would be best to have someone in the cab watching the meter. Then have him turn the key to "Run" and you then hold the wire to the block for a second or 2. The meter should deflect to it's full scale.
The oil gauge works about the same way as the temp. The sending unit for it should be located down where the oil filter adapter is.
Good luck,
