After 236,000 miles on my '95 F350, the steering column is about worn out and I thought I would just replace the whole thing. Is this a pretty simple job to do? What should I expect? My truck is an XL with no tilt or cruise. I assume replacing it with a tilt column would be no big deal but I wondered if I found one with cruise and put it in, would my truck then have cruise control or would additional components and wires need to be installed? Thanks for any help you can give me.
Yes, you may swap in a tilt column, but would need the underhood servo/amplifier in order to have cruise control. Be sure that your donor truck is a 93 or newer if you want to accomplish the cruise upgrade (since Ford changed from the old vacuum modulated servo to the stepper motor style in '93) & get the underhood components to complete the job. I believe from my review of the Ford Shop Manual & EVTM, as well as checking some non-cruise trucks, that all the other wiring & connections are already on your truck.
Your current steering wheel will work if the one on your donor truck is trash, but you will need the horn pad with the cruise buttons in it. Does your truck have a manual or automatic tranny? It will be easiest if your donor is the same, but if not you can cannibalize from your original column to modify your new one. This makes a bit more work, but it can be done.
I just replaced the column in my 95 F350. It had no tilt, air bag, or cruise. It is about a 2 hours job. Extremely easy to do. You need to remove the plastic shroud just below the steering wheel. Remove the lower filler pael below the column. Loosen the bolt that holds the column to the square key coming out of the firewall. Remove the 4 nuts holding the colum in place. Disconnect the wiring harness in 2 places and slide the column down and out. Reverse for installation.
