I had just engaged the drive of the Explorer below and started to back up my snowy drive. The wheels spun a little and that wheel made a loud noise. The truck backed up the drive without further incident. It has gone in and out of 4X4 without problems or noise since.
Was that just the drive engaging and should I be concerned of damage?

that was the hubs locking.....unless it keeps doing it i wouldn't worry about it! just normal! when you first lock in your 4x4 don't smash the skinny pedal, ease into it a lil. give the 4x4 time to engage cause it's all electric and vaccum these days!
I was hoping for that answer. Here's another question. During the recent snows my truck twists like Chubby Checker when going down the highway at low speeds. I have watched other thrucks - some identical to mine pass me looking like they are on dry surface (no side to side motion).
What gives? My tires are not worn out although they are not new either. Can this motion be caused by torque being shifted back and forth between the front and rear? Or just tires breaking free? The twisting is not not violent but is constant and happens several times a minute and is annoying. The truck was in 4WD. Just kidding about the Chubby Checker.

Shouldn't worry about the clunk unless it gets worse. My Ranger and Explorer did that from time to time mostly when I engaged it then spun the tires on take off. It's just the hubs catching and locking in. As for the chubby checker ride I wouldn't know what to say.
