unemployed? read this quick

ok. my work is seasonal, and i started running out of $$ this winter, so i had to do something. ive got 20+ job applications out there, but no one wants to hire someone who is going to quit in 2 months. i put off the idea of the temperary staffing agency ( temp agency ) for short.

i just figured id be getting set up working the crappiest jobs, for the worst people, with convicts for coworkers, and extremely low pay.

well, the work is easy, im getting $10.00 per hour which isnt bad, all the people ive worked with are great! just good people stuck in a bad situation like i am in. the people ive worked for are really good too.

i really wish i didnt overlook the temp. agency idea 2 months ago, i was hurting myself by not trying it out.

i know what ill be doing next winter

now, i just hope my check from the temp agency doesnt bounce tommorrow. ill keep ya posted if ya like!

I'm seasonal also.
But I just sit on but in the winter & collect my unemployment insurance checks & do snow removal for a little extra cash on the side tax free.

sometimes temps are a great way finding of a new line of work. with no commitments on either side. a lot of buisness's use them, you would be surprised at the varity of jobs being offered thru them. anyways congrats on getting work

Glad you found some work. The thing that bugs me is contract workers that do work for a large corp but are employed by a smaller company. The small company rakes in big bucks for little effort. I did that for 5 years, never again. The job is not temporary but you always have the feeling that you are a second class citizen compared to the big corporation's employees. Plus you do most of the work. I switched and now work for the big guy.

Lightbulb Temp Agencies

Temp agencies are an excellent way to fill a seasonal lay-off! They are also cool for someone who doesn't need/want to work at the same job every day. They can be better than employment agencies because you get to test drive the company before you make a commitment, if you don't like them leave and keep temping. The most important thing is try to go to all of the jobs that the Temp Agency sends you to, at least at the start. Once they know that you want to work, they'll keep calling you.
I'm glad that everything worked out for you if a little bit late. Please do keep me posted, and let us know what the Temp job is.

JK

thanks for the "thumbs up" all of ya. i wanted to make this thread so if anyone is in my position that they dont OVERLOOK the temp agencies like i did for 2 months.

all this week ive been working at a book binding place. the books go into a machine ( binder ) come out the other side, i pit them up, set them on a cart. then the other employee grabs them off the cart, and cuts the edges in another machine. then the other guy grabs the books, and boxes them.

very easy, just a bit too repititious. although id really like to stay there for the rest of the winter, so hopefully theyll need me again next week.

Yes, I got my current $18/hour job here by starting as a temp and working up- it does work!

Mike- your also correct except that there are no "real" employees left around here- just contract workers pretty much. So we are not really second class anymore although it used to be as you said. There also seems to be more security in being a "contractor" as the true company employees are being let go left and right these days.

And this is at one of the 50 biggest companies in the world.

The warehouse I work at hires temp workers for their "busy season", which runs anywhere from Jan to Aug, but mostly between Mar to May, and a good many of the temps that they hire are offered full-time jobs with the company. In fact, during the last few years, that's become the best way to get a job there, as very few applications are accepted directly with the company.

In a way, it makes sense, because the company gets a chance to look the temp over to see what kind of worker they are, and so gets to hire the best ones. But at the same time, it really is a raw deal for the worker, since because they don't work for the company, they get paid less and have no company benefits, and since their employment with the temp agency last less than a year, they get no benefits from them, either.
