Big ***** vs Ball joints

Hi all, I have a 74 crew cab with a dana 60 (60F) in the front and a 78 super cab with a dana 60 in the front.

The 75 has big ***** at the wheel instead of ball joints ,I don't know what these are called.
The 78 has ball joints and a u joints like normal.
Which one is better? I had the 78" redone a few years back so I know it is good, but I have never had any experiance with the big ball unit! I am using the 78 as a donnor truck and want the best for the crew cab! Thanks a bunch!

the "big *****" dana-60 is called a closed knuckle , the ball joint dana-60 is called an open knucke.

I believe the open knuckle design is considered stronger.

Thanks for the info! The other question I had was the springs, the 78 has the 2 leaf bent over the drive shaft design and the 74 has the multileaf design, the bent over two leaf ones are new last year, however I don't know if they are going to work with the 35 X12.5 by 16.5 inch tires. any ideas?

hehehe... I like this topic. Kinda caught my attention...

In my experience, it has always been beneficial to have the "Big *****"!

it was under my impression that all ford 4x4s and their owners had "big *****"! LOL! sorry, I know it wasn't the answer your looking for but it was just to good to pass up!

closed nuckles have tapered bearings top and bottom and IMO are better than the ball joint type.

Hands down, the 78' D60. #1 selling point here is the high pinion. The 75' D60 will be a weak low pinion unit, big ***** or not.

With all that Big ***** or not, I should swap the 78 non big baller onto the 74 with big ***** Right???

The open knuckle is better than the closed? How about those springs? 2 leaf or multi leaf?

In most cases, the 2 leaf is better for a smoother ride, the multi leaf for strength and longevity.

Yes, the open knuckle is considered better. Springs? I dunno. I would think the multi-leaf set up would give more artiulation. I suppose it all depends on spring rates.
