Fuel millage while towing

I have a 2001 f250 lariet crew cab, I recently installed a Diablo Sport chip with three settings Standard,54hp,78hp. I took a trip from New Orleans to Key West with no trailer and no load. On my way down I had the 54hp chip on and used a 3 cetain boost additive and traveled at 70-75 mph and got 21 miles to a gallon. On the way back I hauled a 30 ft trailer with a sail boat, trailer and boat weighed about 6500# the boat on the trailer sticks up about 10ft from the road so there is alot of windage. My milage on the way back traveling at 60-65 was about 10-11mpg do you think this is average or low, I was hopeing for around 13-14.

Forgot to add to my previous post, a friend of mine has a bike trailer, which weighs about 1000 lbs with bikes. het gets the same 11 - 12 when towing. Must not be the weight, but the wind resistance that really kills us.

I have a 99 SD 4X4 hauling an 8 1/2 cab over camper (lots of wind resistance) and towing a 7800# boat and get 11 - 12. Mine is running 3.73 gears and completely stock and I don't use any additives. With just the camper I get 13 -14. With the topper on in the winter I get 13 - 14. The highest I ever got was 18 on a road trip with just the topper on a warm spring day in Alaska, 50 deg.

Were you using the chip on the way back? Do you have gauges, if not a must? What other mods do yo have? What gears are you running?

I have a '99 pulling 13,000# of Montana 5th wheel and get around 11 m.p.g. and I think that is pretty good. I'd love to find the silver bullet to get 14 though.

21 miles to the gallon at 75 mph?? Count your blessings. I get 15 whether I am in town or headed down the highway (below 2000 on the tach) empty. I would love to get 17. When I tow the horse trailer I get 11-12. Man, I am going to have nightmares now about 21 miles to the gallon.....

I pulled a 28' travel trailer from Seattle to Idaho this summer. The route takes you over the Cascades. On the way over, I was extremely cautious about having the propane flowing too freely, and got 13mpg. On the way back, I was a lot braver, and turned the propane up. We cruised at 75mph over the pass, and when we got home, I figured out the mileage: 15.7mpg, but I used a lot of propane.
