I have a 93 Explorer with the old stereo in it, which I have removed and I am trying to install a newer DIN Panasonic stereo. I have all the power wires connected right, but I can't get the speakers to come on. It's has the premium sound system, so it has the 8 socket square piece to plug the wires for the speakers into, not the long flat rectangular piece. I tried crimping wires directly into the 8 socket plugin, but the speakers will not come on... I'm thinking that by doing this I might have somehow bypassed the factory amplifier... My stereo does have 4 inputs like those on A/V cables for say a DVD player (two reds-two whites) ... any suggestions?
You need to get the amp bypass cable for the factory amp. It's located behind the passengers side rear panel. Get the proper wiring harness for the stereo and just connect everything together.... from there it should not give you any problems.
Oh yeah... the red and white RCA connectors that you have are the amp outs... to connect to an aftermarket amp. Do not use these to try to drive the speakers as it will not work.
buy the FDK10 connector. it is for the premium sound package in the explorers. i had the same problem in my 1996 explorer and couldnt figure out what to do. i called the company of the connectors i bought and they told me that i needed the FDK10 connector because of my premium sound.
Thanks guys, it's all setup... wondering if I should go ahead and replace the door speakers... I hate it when money is burning a hole in your pocket...
Absoluty... the factory speakers... even the premium sound ones... suck. I did a custom install with 6x8 3-ways in the rear doors and 5 1/4" components in the front. Major difference. The only thing with the 5 1/4" component speakers is, you will have to make a custom plate to hold them.... not to hard to do, just a little time comsuming to do it right.
