Found a V-10 Excursion limited with 89,000miles for $17,000. Very good condition, maybe, it was dark. Test drive was good, except it was all over the place. I’m not sure if that’s the wandering problem or caused by the huge tires someone stuck on it. I’m looking for advise on what to expect, I fear the wandering (at the state it’s in) and plug blowouts. Any comments?
I had a similar experience on my 2000. I first replaced the front ball joints which I am told go around 50K miles since Ford was too cheap to add grease fittings. Several of mine were rusted tight.
I then had the truck aligned, and it was still all over the road. It felt like the toe was too far out. I then took it back to the garage and they discovered that the alignment was in sitting still, but when they put a spring bar between the front wheels, the toe moved out. They then adjusted the toe to specifications with the spring bar in place. The spring bar simulates the force put on the wheels when driving. After this was done it, it drove great.
Make sure you also check the power door lock actuators, and door ajar switches. I have replaced 3 lock acutators and the driver door ajar switch has been replaced twice in 80K miles.
