1997 Ford F250 (96 body style) Heavy Duty XL 4x4 w/longbed and automatic tranny w/shifter on the steering wheel. Lately I've been noticing that whenever the truck motor is cold the overdrive light on the shifter tends to come on (when its lit up it means its off). If I push the shifter back and let it forward the light goes off. Sometimes it stays off, sometimes it comes back on when I hit a bump. The overdrive button on the end of the shifter will still turn it on and off. Anybody know what could be causing this bug? The truck has 78,000 miles on it.
Check the connections on the tranny. You may have a connector that has loosened or the sheilding may have a wear spot in it somewhere that is allowing it to ground out. Also take the connectors apart adn clean the contacts inside, corrosion can play a part in "bugs".
It could be as simple as that. But start small and work from there. If you don't find anything down there try to follow the wires back up through the cab and to the steering column. You have a connector there as well.
