Ok I have a 93 F150 4x4 extended cab with the 302. Late in the fall I was stranded with a large amount of water in my distro cap. I dried it out and was good to go. I changed the whole works distro cap, rotor, wires and plugs. The very first time I took it out a got a check engine light. Long story short it is reading 172 which is running lean. However it pings and studders going up hills(small mountains I live in upstate NY). I run super in it even at the current price. So tonight I replaced the plugs and checked all the wires. Now It doesnt ping as badly and seems to have some of the power back. While tracing the plug wires I found a broken red hard plastic vaccum hose which I replaced. It was the one the goes from the coffee can looking thing. Anyway I am still getting the same code. The guy at Autozone said to replace the O2 sensor. Let me know what you all think.
At this point I am game for anything. My questions are why does it ping under load? What effect does the O2 sensor have on the input of gas? Could I have altered the timing when I changed the rotor and cap? I realize that these maybe simple questions but I hate to do anything without understanding why I am doing it. Also do I only have 1 O2 sensor or more?
Thanks again for any assistance in this.
The O2 sensor gives the computer feedback, which lets it know if its calculations for air fuel ratio are correct. Some O2 sensors will fault towards the lean side of things when they go bad, so it's a good possibility that it needs to be replaced.
