Can you cite a source for this information (other than bypass filter supplier literature)? This contradicts information I have seen here and elsewhere.

. Remember this part from the first post......
"Part of the deal was we got a 1979 Bronco. This truck is ONLY used for plowing."

It’s an old plow truck. There is nothing more foolish than spending money on something that will yield no real return. If his engine is good, then it will probably continue to run well for a reasonable amount of time with simple 15$ oil changes once a month. This trucks worst enemy is the fact that if probably sits half of the year forming rust and drying seals. If this were a new truck and the guy was interested in maximizing his engine life your suggestion would be worth consideration.

On a side note...... Most every old plow only truck I have seen is a POS in one way or another. I got in one once that had a chunk of plywood for a floor, but the old 250L6 worked.

Well, therion, you did everything but answer my question - where is the source that says particles between 0 and 20 um account for 60% of engine wear? I think that is incorrect.

i don't see how, big particals won't damage worse than little ones. oil can suspend conaminates but wouldn't the bigger one be harder to keep off the bearing surfaces? i would think the oil could hold up the little ones better.

That's what I have always heard, Tex - that a very high percentage of engine wear - 80 to 90% - is from particles 40 microns and larger. That is precisely why I asked therion to post the source of his information.

There's nothing on that post that says anything about particle sizes and engine wear. That link is a sales pitch for a book. Maybe you should read it.

There is no better way to keep oil clean than to run a bypass system - period!
Wrong - the best way to keep clean oil in your engine is to change it.

Looks like you have the obcession with clean oil ....and about the calculation you made above: Your not saving any money at all........I run MOBIL 1 Full synthetic oil & filter and change it every 6,000 miles. Im not saving any money, but it sure beats the hell out of $1.90 / quart dino oil LMFAO

Oh my! What have I started? It seems that every since I added that cool little picture to my signature, all my threads have gone down the drain! Maybe it's a sign!

Anyways, I think I will stick with changing the oil once a month. I am under there greasing my u-joints and front end parts anyways!

Thanks guys but let's not let this thing get out of hand!

You STILL haven't answered my question, which was very simple: where did you get your information when you posted that 60% of engine wear is due to particles between 0 and 20 microns in size?

Can you please just answer the question?

keep hearing people talk about "oil analysis"....what is it....sounds like you need lab and a registered nurse on hand to do it. Is it just a fancy way of sayin I am gonna look at my oil and see if any thing looks funny it?

MJ - Blackstone Labs is a great source for oil analysis, and the cost is about 20 bucks.

therion - finally, you actually posted something to support your figures, congratulations. I was beginning to think you were incapable. Although I haven't gone through all of it (and I will), at first flush it looks like more sales literature and unsubstantiated opinion.

I'm curious, if you can go 300k without bypass filtration, and you're "striving for more than just 'normal' wear", how many vehicles do you own that have more than that on the clock?
