I finally have it! Ive wanted a 69 mustang for about 30 years now....thats bout 10 years more then iv ben alive, buuuuut you get the point. Neway, ive got a 302 coupled to a c-4 auto... that just wont do. Im about to put my hands on a 351W block and build it up...add a 3.85" crank 351W rods and 302 pistons bored .060 over...(399 stroker). With the mods i wanna do i figure ill have 12:1 compression and 500+ horses N/A...and that special 150 shot of juice. I wanna put a 5 speed in it and im lookin for a tranny that will hold round 6-700 horses...My question is "will a zf s5-42 hold my kinda power"? and what trucks shud i look for em in? just the early-end of old body style F250-350z?

For a Mustang, I would look for a tremec. Either the 3550 TKO, or the 6 speed. They should be able to get beefed up for the extra power. I believe the ZF will be too big and have terrible gear ratios for a Mustang.
The ZF will not fit. It's way to big. I own a 65 fastback with a 5-speed and I have a ZF sitting in my garage. Trust me, the ZF is way to big plus the other factors mention by the others.
With the 12:1 and NOS you may have head gasket problems if you don't o-ring the heads for an extra seal. Just food for thought.
Ya the more ive looked into it and what i have heard so far it seems that i shouldnt even think about the Zf's in it...I know that finding a T-5 will be soooooooooo easy...one question tho..."if i get the t-5, and upgrade it with the world class gears n such, will it be able to hold my kinda power...or am i looking at finding one out of a newer model cobra...the only reason i ask this is because the dad of a buddy of mine has a 67 fastback with a 514 crate motor in it with a blower...around 850 hp with jsut a TKO II in it, and those r rated to what 450 ft lbs?
It's one thing to have big numbers and not hook up the rear tires. Once you hook up with those kinds of numbers something will give in the trans. It's just a matter of time.
My experience with big blocks is they run much better on the street with an auto but every one has what they like and thats a good thing.
As for your selection I would look into what EPNCSU2006 has suggested. That will be the best insurance. Buying a T5 and trying to upgrade it will cost just as much if not more than just following EPNCSU2006 advice and you still wouldn't have a trans as strong as the TKO or 3550.
'Preeshiate it RTM...It does sounds like a good idea...now with that being said...the TKO or 3550 would bolt up to a 351W wouldnt it? I meen the 302 n 351 r the same block but jsut with diff journels and strokes n such rite?
All the ford small blocks are the same so yes it will bolt right up. Just make sure you buy the correct kit for your set up, flywheel, starter and so on.
Have any pics of your car?
Heres my web site. I have a page that shows my custom cable conversion for my T5 and soon I will have pics of a cable conversion on a 68 mustang using the same cable. http://home.comcast.net/~grabblue65/
Ight kew...
No i dont have ne of the stang at its current place...the only ones i have are of when i first got it...primer peeling seats torn...u get the idea. But ill get some on here ASAP...
One more thing...RTM did u have any truble trying to find a place to mount the clutch cable support bracket...you no the thing that mounts of the firewall to distribute the pressure applied to the firewall? I have seen this conversion adn this is what i am gunna do but I also no that there isnt a flat place on the firewall where its inline with the bellhousing. just a master cylander...ne suggestions?
The TKO and 3550 use a "standard Ford toploader" bolt pattern. Either will work with a stock 69 Mustang 4 speed BH. The TKO uses a 26 spline input though (much stronger) so it takes a C***y clutch disc.
For the cable conversion I made for my 65 I guess I am lucky in that the top of the firewall has a flat spot. I made the pieces on the firewall to distribute the load on my car.
My buddy is installing the same cable in his 68 but it will function a little different. The 67 to 70 cars do not have the clearence above the clutch pedal and between the under side of the cowl. So I should have some pics or something from him to post on my web page soon. I have no experience with the after market cable conversions offered out there. I just made my own and saved $250.
I also made my own cross member and so has my buddy with the 68.
thats awsome...gotta get congrats to ppl that can do it themselves...wut did u use? just sum nylon cord and alot of hopes and dreams or did u have to go search for a double lined cable with this and thats added?...and yea there is no room on the firewall at all. I was trying to unbolt the exhaust pipes from the manifolds be4 we pulled the motor and i think i ended up just K.O ing my master cylander and broke my hand at it...lol
strangerranger i need to ask ya sumthin...1)did u have them build u a tranny or did u build ur own with the kit? 2)does the synchro kit come with the 5th gear?
The bad part about my cable is it is no longer offered by Hays. It was a replacement cable for the early Fox body cars that replace the quadrant set up with just a cable. It is a very heavy duty cable. My buddy just picked one up from ehay for his car.
I did alot of research before I decided to tackle the job on my own.

I just had them build me one. I'm not equipped to do tranny work.
The synchro box comes with either a 0.73:1 or a 0.59:1 5th. The 0.73 is almost perfect for an open track event car and the 0.59 is a real highway cruise gear. I was torn but decided on the 0.73.
