I have a 1999 F350 that has lost the vacum needed to actuate the automatic 4 wheel drive. The leak is at the inside seal on the right side. Is this a rare failure? Is there anything that I may have done to cause the problem? Thanks, Dave
No, not really. It's common, meaning that this is usually what goes wrong with ESOF but considering the number of ESOF systems in use it is not overly common.

Some here may argue that the fact that you bought ESOF caused the problem but I would say that inactivity may have played a larger role in it.
Just as with anything else, it is good to exercise the ESOF system at least once a month, every month.
Welcome! I hope that your next posts won't have any problems listed!
